![]() ![]() If an athlete is not playing well, they are usually heavily criticised on various social media platforms, which leads to significant mental health problems. This also directly impacts the way sports are played, as for example in the NBA, basketball is no longer perceived as a success if a team is winning by doing the work together Individual athletes who score the most points on a team or are known all-stars, are the conversation starters on social media. This also makes users on social media express their toxicity and sometimes even directly threaten the player. Since sports betting is so widespread within North America, individuals who place bets on these types of stars to achieve certain accolades, and proceed to get angry/frustrated when the player does not perform well. While individual statistics can be important for recognition and accolades, such as making the Pro Bowl or All-Star team, stat padding is generally seen as a negative practice because it prioritises personal statistics over team success. This did not work out well for Giannis, as the NBA officially took away that rebound in their stats book and he finished the night with 9 rebounds, not 10. An example of users calling out stat-padding on social media to athletes is this Tweet by ClutchPoints where NBA All-Star Giannis Antetokounmpo is seen purposefully throwing the ball of his backboard, to catch the ball and earn himself another rebound, giving him what is known as a Triple Double. As social media describes it, the era of “Stat-padding”, is where social media users would rather engage with content that includes graphics of an athlete’s sports achievements, whether it be points, or total scores over a time period. Social media certainly does allow for active sports discussion from practically anyone who has an opinion, but this has led to emotional, and mental health problems for these sports players. Social media certainly has accelerated sports media, as fans no longer have to rely solely on traditional media sources like newspapers, TV, and radio channels to get their sports news and updates, as online platforms provide a vast majority of information and content, including highlights, live scores, and analysis, which can be accessed easily and quickly from any device with an active internet connection. This also allows for the widespread of fake news and clickbait articles, as an example NFL All-Star Le’Veon Bell was targeted in 2018 by fake news that said he was pursuing a rap career over his sports career, which caused a lot of confusion amongst fans and caused negative comments to go Bell’s way. It is very easy to overlook the impact social media has on an individual's mental health, as these types of messages and widespread hate are certain to cause unnecessary anxiety and feelings of depression to these individuals. Gymnast Gabby Douglas received criticism for not placing her hand on her heart during the national anthem, while swimmer Ryan Lochte was targeted for fabricating a story about being robbed. An example can be seen During the 2016 Rio Olympics, as several athletes were subjected to cyberbullying on social media platforms. Most of these platforms do not have ways of censoring content, which usually allows for toxic and negative fan reactions to directly impact athletes. These platforms have given fans a gateway to engage with those athletes, share their thoughts and opinions, and get real-time updates on the latest news and events. Social media platforms provide an accessible and personal connection between athletes and their fans, allowing fans to follow their favourite players and teams, interact with them, and get a behind-the-scenes look at their lives. One of the most significant impacts of social media on sports is the ability for fans to connect with their choice of athletes and teams. But due to most platforms having speech unmonitored, it results in toxic comments from the majority of the internet when an athlete does not perform to their full potential. The impact of social media on sports has been significant, and it has transformed the way the world consumes, shares, and discusses sports-related content. Social media platforms like Reddit, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube have become a powerful tool in the world of sports, providing new avenues for fans, athletes, and teams to connect and engage with each other. ![]() Social media has revolutionised the world in many ways, and the way it impacts sports, athletes, and their families is often a detrimental effect. ![]()
